The "I'm not dead" rundown:
1) Work is busy and tedious. And busy
2) I finally caved and turned the A/C on yesterday. (I swear the BGE rate hike occurring in the hottest months of the year was not coincidental.)
3) I've had maybe five minutes to glance at LJ and comment on TWO friends' posts, so I am completely behind on the friends list.
4) Security light is installed in the back. Woot!
5) Rented Mirrormask this week. Shiny. (I'd be more in-depth, but this is a quick rundown.)
6) All you people at G2006, have a blast and say hi to Greg W for me.
So, anyway, in the spirit of Friday and randomness, here's some recommendations:
First, webcomics I haven't linked to yet. Most synopses are blatantly stolen from The Webcomic List as mine kind of suck.
Dominic Deegan: Oracle For Hire (Daily)
"Dominic Deegan, a grumpy seer, and his friends have faced violent knights, murderous witches, incompetent thieves, furry sea monsters, angry mobs, magical slimes, flesh-eating demon lords, the blight of the undead, and mood swings. Their adventures have only just begun. Come and see for yourself. Just beware of Death From Above!"
Seriously, set aside some time and read this one from the beginning. Aside from the nearly endless supply of puns, Dominic Deegan boasts a heck of a complicated and intriguing storyline. You can't jump into the middle of it, but reading through the archives is worth it.
Nahast: Lands of Strife (Mondays)
Swordmistress Derrexi Tzelan arrives at the city of Beldatz under orders to start a squad of warrior girls, not knowing of the great turmoil that may herald the end of the Fifth Age in the world of Nahast.
Good art, good story, great world-building. The world of Nahast is incredibly detailed and fascinating; it's not the "standard" fantasy setting in any sense, and you can tell the author spent as much time if not more in creating and detailing a wholly original setting for the story.
The Order of the Stick
Follows the misadventures of a Dungeons and Dragons party, and one wonders how they've gotten so far without killing each other. "Proof once again that we are the only adventurers for whom the letters 'AD&D' stand for 'Attention Deficit Disorder.'"
This rec is all about the humor, although if you've never played D&D most of it will go right over your head. If you haven't, just go right to the Monty Python-inspired strip that got me reading. (This assumes, of course, that you know your Monty Python.) If you have played D&D, you will not be disappointed.
Two Lumps
The adventures of Ebenezer and Snooch, two typical housecats. Being "typical," of course, means that nothing is safe.
Any cat owner will find this funny. Dude, just today's strip - how Snooch plays DDR - had me dying.
And some fanfic recommendations, just because.
Begin the Beguine, by N.L. Rummi (Firefly)
The crew of Serenity is offered a very lucrative job by a wealthy aristocrat. But when Mal is prevented from accompanying Zoë to the negotiations, there's only one man suitable for the job. [ZoëWash]
It's a strong, original Zoe/Wash piece that includes action as well as romance and provides a believable story as to how Zoe and Wash first got together (and what happened to the mustache).
Winding River, by Mistress of the Knight (Firefly/Stargate SG-1)
River is lost. Where she finds herself and what she uncovers there may teach her more about her world than the crew of Serenity are willing to face. Major spoilers for "Serenity."
This is probably the first convincing Firefly/Stargate crossover I've ever read that isn't a fusion. WIP, but I'm recommending it anyway because it's just intriguing and well-characterized, and I'm impressed that the author's actually found a way to convincingly fit the two shows into one universe (although that depends on where it goes).
That's it for now - I'm out of here! :)
