[personal profile] mandolin
If anyone was wondering where I was on IM today, two words: department picnic. My co-workers are insane. It was a great deal of fun.

Anyway, here's something I snagged from [livejournal.com profile] athersgeo and intended to post earlier today...

1. Your Livejournal username and what it means:

The first username I wanted was Mandolin, but it was taken (by someone who hasn't updated it in over a year) - which was a nickname from college theater (my first and last name smooshed together. [livejournal.com profile] mandichaos, a separate journal that I've kind of abandoned, was a combination of my name (Mandi) and my college nickname (Chaos), which was inexplicably taken when I signed up. This ended up being [livejournal.com profile] weirdweb because it was supposed to be the update journal for my site, Mandi's Weird Web Page. I may just close out mandichaos soon and get a rename token to make things easier on myself. :)

2. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest) how well does your livejournal represent who you actually are?

I'd say a 7. There are some things in public posts I omit or deliberately misrepresent to protect certain friends I talk about from certain people who've taken an unhealthy interest in the past. But the tendency to ramble on about random things is definitely me. I took two more points off because I can at least proofread LJ posts; real-life on-the-spot babbling from me is nowhere near as coherent.

3. How much about your life do you post to lj?

A lot. Again, there's some really personal stuff that doesn't get put here, and half of it is friends-locked since I know better, but - yeah, a lot of everyday stuff winds up here.

4. Is there anything you refuse to post about?

Politics, mostly. I'm actually fairly moderate, a bit left of center, and I'm tired of so many people on the extreme right (and some on the extreme left) who think that verbal abuse = political debate. It doesn't help that I tend to keep an open mind on a lot of issues, and then some people interpret that as "flip-flopping" or "ooh, an easy convert." If I come across a good political discussion I'll add my two cents, but I'm very poor at airing my opinions without context or an idea of the audience - so I don't usually instigate political discussion. :)

5. On a scale of 1-10 how interesting do you think your own journal is to others?

Considering that my writing hasn't been a major topic (since I haven't written much of anything lately), I'd say a 6. The remaining 6 is for my occasional rant and run of weird luck.

6. From who/how did you find out about lj?

While I haven't talked to her in a while, it's all [livejournal.com profile] heatherly's doing. Wish I hadn't driven her nuts when we were sharing an apartment...

7. Has anyone ever joined lj because of you?

Back when LJ was invite-only (which I miss - it may have been inconvenient but it kept spam/troll accounts to a minimum), I got [livejournal.com profile] jennies, [livejournal.com profile] violetbloom, [livejournal.com profile] leiza, [livejournal.com profile] mommie_geek, and a couple more that the brain refuses to dredge up.

8. What proportion of your posts are friends only?

About 40% - partly because of the reasons listed in #2, partly because I want to babble about personal stuff without complete strangers being able to read it. Also, there are non-LJ users I know who read my livejournal and who enjoy teasing me in the first place (you know who you are). I give them enough fodder as it is offline.

9. What is your favorite interest on lj?

For all the interests I have listed (and they need to be seriously updated), I don't have a favorite. In terms of entertainment, I'm more likely to discuss books or movies than I am music.

10. Has anything on lj ever caused you to establish, rethink, or even change your belief or position on something?

Rethink, yes. It does help that I try to keep an open mind.

11. How often do you respond/comment on other peoples journals?

It depends on how busy I am and how not braindead I am. I go through periods where I get behind on answering e-mails and replying to posts, and sometimes I comment on other people's journal entries a month or two too late.

12. Do you prefer to write in your journal or read other journals?

Only if I have something to write about. I'm so long-winded that my posts are rarely short, and therefore making a coherent post isn't, say, a 15 minute quickie. And since I'm so picky, I figure that if I'm going to post publicly, it might as well be something worth reading. I don't intend to be showcased on [livejournal.com profile] u_make_lj_suck anytime soon.

13. Have you ever had something mean said to you or been stalked, harassed, or got into an argument/flame war on lj (or did it to someone else)?

On LiveJournal? No, actually.

14. Have you ever banned someone from your journal?

Yes. Only because I know his trolling activities from a newsgroup, and at first ignored him because I figured he was harmless. He crossed the line in February when I mentioned that my apartment had been burglarized and he replied with, "Too bad you weren't in the place when it was being robbed. They would have had to kill you to keep you from talking. And no one would miss you."

I never dignified that one with a response, but the second I discovered he had an LJ account, I pre-emptively banned him.

15. Who are your favorite lj friend(s) and why?

16. How many of your lj friends have you actually met?

Quite a bit, actually...

I survived high school with [livejournal.com profile] violetbloom, and college with [livejournal.com profile] jennies, [livejournal.com profile] heatherly and [livejournal.com profile] blue_soulfire.

I've met the following people in RL: [livejournal.com profile] alex_garg, [livejournal.com profile] athersgeo, [livejournal.com profile] bktheirregular, [livejournal.com profile] brooklynx, [livejournal.com profile] celli, [livejournal.com profile] crzydemona, [livejournal.com profile] dotsomething, [livejournal.com profile] dreamiegarg, [livejournal.com profile] ecogryff, [livejournal.com profile] emambu, [livejournal.com profile] ganeris, [livejournal.com profile] greenbaron, [livejournal.com profile] gregx, [livejournal.com profile] irc_goliath, [livejournal.com profile] irenak, [livejournal.com profile] kwsapphire, [livejournal.com profile] lefthandsnake, [livejournal.com profile] lynati_1, [livejournal.com profile] mauig, [livejournal.com profile] mtgat, [livejournal.com profile] patrickat, [livejournal.com profile] sabledrake, [livejournal.com profile] seri_wavelength, [livejournal.com profile] silly_cleo, [livejournal.com profile] spacebabie, and [livejournal.com profile] y2hecate.

(I should point out that I met about 80% of the above through the Gathering of the Gargoyles. Counting [livejournal.com profile] bktheirregular because I snuck him into G2003. ;) )

I do still plan to make up for lost time and see [livejournal.com profile] kevenn and [livejournal.com profile] mommie_geek when I'm in Ohio and don't have a wedding to deal with, and next time I visit Chicago will actually succeed in seeing [livejournal.com profile] havocthecat and [livejournal.com profile] mtgat. I do plan to be able to make it to one of [livejournal.com profile] the_never's shows sometime.

17. Of all of the people on lj you know of, who is the most like you?

Hm. Honestly, I don't think I've met anyone nearly as scatterbrained as me.

18. Have you ever wanted to meet someone on lj?

Did you read #16?
