Is it just me, or does that sound like a gutter brain moment?

Anyway. After the presentation yesterday, I sought out the DVD and then pursued my latest strategy in getting my art commission done: dinner at Panera.

The Panera on the way home is not that crowded and very well-lit; I get dinner, take it to a big table with good light, eat my dinner, then set it aside and work on my commission for about an hour. (The commission's always zipped up safely in my portfolio when I'm eating, I know better.) Sounds silly, but I get a lot done that way without the TV, computer or messy apartment to distract me. The staff there has no problem with it.

I found a table in the back last night, ate my salad and got to work, setting the soup aside. A couple people passed by and commented on it, and I noticed there were a couple of kids running around and kept one eye on them. One of them, a girl about six years old, came up and started asking me questions.

No, this isn't going where you might think it is. I have dealt with kids that age who spew out a stream of obnoxious questions and whining. Thankfully, she was not in that category, although she could talk your ear off. After making sure I knew where her father was and that he could see us and I could see him and that he was okay with her hanging out at my table, I let her draw on the scrap paper I'd brought with a light drawing pencil I wasn't using.

She kept on talking as she drew, using every square inch of the paper and telling me to come up with anything and she could draw it (more often than not, I played indecisive and let her pick), and didn't keep me from getting work done on the commission. (Her dad came around once or twice to make sure she was okay and that I wasn't bothered.) I think she reminded me of me at that age, when I was being babysat by Susan next door and drawing with her (and asking her to draw stuff for me) on scrap paper in the downstairs den.

She filled up both sides of the paper and gave it to me as a gift, "Well, not without the artist's signature," I joked.

I didn't expect her to print and spell her first and LAST name on the page for me. I was kind of surprised and a little bothered at that; she seemed a little too trusting towards a total stranger, even with Dad on the other side of the room.

So by the time her Dad came up again, I realized two things: 1) I'd nearly finished the picture and 2) I'd totally forgotten about my soup, which had gone cold. "You can heat it up in the microwave," she said, and proceeded to show me exactly where the microwave was (and I'd have missed it totally, too, since it was down beneath the coffee pots). I told her it was nice meeting her, and went to get my soup.

I was heating up the soup when they left, and she said, "It was nice meeting you, too," as they walked out.

As I've said before, having kids is not my ultimate goal in life. I'm not against the idea, but I know that currently, I am not ready for that kind of responsibility. Heck, it's been a while since I've had a serious relationship, so having kids is something way, WAY down the road for me. I don't think I'm Mommy material quite yet.

Do I still feel that way? Well, yeah, I'm still not ready.

But I think now I'd qualify as an acceptable crazy aunt.

Being a crazy aunt is fun, believe me! :) Especially when as your niece or nephew gets engaged/married, and you've got all those cute pictures you can pull out where they're running around in just a diaper and a Burger King crown. Or have chocolate cake, icing and ice cream smeared from ear to ear over half their face. Or when they're walking around with a blanket that a cousin has arranged on their head to be a wedding veil and train, and they're carrying your basketball as their wedding bouquet. :) I have these pictures, and I showed them to my niece's maid of honor and bridesmaids before her wedding two years ago.

Now I've got a brand-new great nephew who will be two months old in a couple of days. :) I get to be a crazy aunt, and a crazy great aunt. :) And in the end, the niece or nephew goes home with their Mom and Dad. :) Crazy Aunt-hood is great! :)
