1) On the similarity of characters: I always figured that making a big deal of someone looking like someone else tended to strain at the fabric of a crossover. Rule of thumb, I think: the closer you know somebody, the less likely you are to notice stunning similarities to someone else.
2) Here's one first-rate crossover that you might think can't possibly work: When Hellmouths Collide ( http://www.rtis.com/nat/user/chimera/index2.htm ). Just don't read it while drinking. It's pretty much on the top of the top-ten list...
