Rest in peace, five-year-old Dell.
Jan. 5th, 2005 07:48 pmWell, after four and a half years of use and trying to get as much as I could out of it (and six months in my closet once I got the iMac), I have finally laid my old Dell to rest. That is, it's now in the hands of the Howard County Board of Education - I got myself in gear and donated the sucker today after cleaning it off last night. (I did get a receipt.)
Let me tell you, the experience made me appreciate my iMac even more. But it is a little sad to be getting rid of that machine - it was the first computer I ever bought with my own money (technically - it was put on Mom's card, but I paid her the money), and it marked my junior year of college, arguably the most interesting year I spent there since that was when the SisterHood of Evil began to take shape. Oh, and there was the play and the literary magazine, too. ;)
With the exception of the Great Video Card Suicide Attempt of 2001 (apparently, McAfee version 5 caused the video drivers to die), I got a lot of mileage out of that machine, and it went through hell with me. (Three dorm rooms, my parents' house, a storage space and two apartments, to be exact.) I remember Mom and I had some reservations about buying a new machine, but I seriously got my money's worth.
And wow, this has also driven home the fact that January of 2000 - the middle of my junior year, when I bought that sucker - is five years in the past.
Five years.
A moment of silence for the Dell Dimension XPS that I abused above and beyond the call of duty for so long.
...
Okay, that's enough.
Kitchen and bathroom are clean; living room is mostly clean. Work room and bedroom are going to take a little bit longer. But I've now got a bit more space in my closet to fill.
