I cast my vote in favor of "it was late and the manuscript was due in the morning and the editor had abandoned by their staff and simply decided they felt like it."
This is one of the reasons Hood's 2002 yearbooks is as secretly awesome as it is. Two a.m., soda, pizza, and an exhausted editor (and assistant) makes for some interesting entries. ^_^
