Breaking radio silence for... comic book rambling.
I know, I know, but BB #29 FINALLY came out and after months of praying that the new regular writer wouldn't suck, I can't not throw out my first impressions.
To put it succinctly: I'm going to give Sturges a chance.
Maybe my reaction's a little more positive coming in the wake of Pfeifer, who had some decent premise ideas (I'll give BB #28 this: its general premise was promising but the execution tanked) but really didn't do his homework on the characters. It's pretty apparent, however, that Sturges does give a damn and did do his homework in terms of characterization. Thank God. Also, it seems that the border patrol and immigration et al are being set up strictly as the backdrop for this storyline; the real story - that is, whatever's really going on behind the scenes - isn't necessarily about the Issues.
Anyway, it's lunch break and I fail at making sense so... bullet point time!
- Metahuman cosplay sites? ...I don't want to know. And the villain title fight was amusing.
- I initially thought it was weird that Peacemaker was organizing the Vanguards, but it makes sense that he got the job out of boredom.
- Brenda + Paco = AWKWARD. I could essay a lot on this, but I'll only say that I'm kind of amused Brenda's dealing with the denial worse than Paco, who just... doesn't seem to notice anything. "My world is crumbling." Pfft.
- The Obligatory Exposition for new readers is actually pretty decently handled.
- "Our son really does suck at being on TV." Poor Jaime.
- Aw. Paco's mom is adorable.
- I figured Mari was up to something. I have no idea what's really going on here, but it looks interesting.
So... could be interesting. We'll see. And hey, lunch break is just about over.
