Aug. 19th, 2002 01:26 pmFirst off: Nothing to See Here is updated. And while the comic itself isn't that significant, I think it looks really nice. Poor Aidan.
You know, I'm really torn on what to do with my webcomic. I'm not planning on ending it or anything, heaven forbid, but I'm debating the wisdom of promoting it heavily. On the one hand, I'd like a little more exposure... but on the other hand, I don't want it so badly that I'm willing to risk a site shutdown. Yes, folks, I'm talking about the evils of bandwidth limits. First, the ladies of As If! had bandwidth problems and had to get more donations to get their limit jacked up. Now, Erika and Dylan, the incredibly talented artists behind "Bite Me" and "Coffee to Go" have been hit by it. They got linked up by Penny Arcade, and before you could blink, the traffic to their site increased so much that it killed their bandwidth limit for the rest of the month. So now they're trying to find an affordable solution. If you wanna help, go check out the LJ's of covielle and fartsofire for more info.
This has got me thinking. I have always been a feedback addict with everything I do. I used to be the kind of annoying little kid who would just interrupt a conversation or run up and go, "Look what I did!" in need of attention. I finally learned tact, but inside that little kid is still there. That little kid wants to plug NTSH everywhere and anywhere until the mailbox is flooded.
But, of course, I have grown up, graduated from college, and gotten a real job. And while I'm financially better off than a lot of just-graduated college students, I still need to watch my budget. The expenses involved in moving into my new apartment are going to make my credit card bill painful indeed. My rent is about $200 more a month now that I'm on my own. Now I can handle my expenses, but I can't help thinking, "I could be saving more money than this." So I'm understandably reluctant to tempt fate and plug heavily. The last big flash of exposure I got (from Michael McKay, who plugged my strip on the front page of Alice! for a week), didn't seem to hurt my bandwidth, but... that was just for a week, and I didn't plug much after that. (Although I got some lovely, lovely e-mails from folks who saw the birthday tribute I did for Mom.)
I mean, I could hunt around for providers with unlimited or larger bandwidth limits, but you know... I just got on ReadyHosting a few months ago. I like my current webhost, I really do. And I just don't want to have to go hunting for another one, especially since I paid for the whole year. ($100 for a year's webhosting is damn good if you consider that divides out to $8.33/month.) Besides, I'm not as serious as a lot of the webtoonists out there.
Other stuff: DON'T ASK about fanfic. Please. I'm trying to get caught up on TGS work, although the current staff discussions are way over my head. I'm also undergoing physical therapy for my hands (and I'm pleased to say it seems to be working), and trying to get my apartment up to scratch. I've got too much wall space and not enough stuff to put up on it.
Need to get moving...
