Okay, stupid rant ahead.

Like I said, I was MIA from work most of yesterday afternoon because of the picnic. I get an e-mail in my mailbox inviting me to a co-worker's birthday lunch "tomorrow" - which I initially take to mean today.

So I put out a request to carpool with someone willing to be back by 1 pm. I have a meeting.

Three hours pass. No one replies. Which is weird because there's always someone willing to carpool.

Bored, I check the calendar, wondering if I can run an errand beforehand or if I should forget about it.
The calendar shows it on SATURDAY.

No wonder no one replied, I figure, and decide that I might as well just go run my errands and be back to meet people at the cafeteria.

I go out. Run errand that I would have been able to leave for earlier if I knew the lunch was Saturday. Takes annoyingly longer than expected. Get back, go down to cafeteria. No one is there.

Back to my desk. I look at the calendar again.

The organizer scheduled it at 11:40 pm on Friday to 1 pm Saturday - instead of the 11:40 am - 1 pm Friday that it was supposed to be. Her retraction e-mail only said, "Oh, I meant 11:40 am," so I took it to mean 11:40 am on Saturday. (But we have never, EVER, had a birthday lunch on a Saturday. Ever. Someone with common sense would have processed this, but me? No.)

Guess where everyone was?

It was 12:30 pm when I discovered this, called her on her cell and tried to find out what was going on, came off as a bitch, then wished co-worker a happy birthday.

I now have 20 minutes to inhale my lunch and get ready for the meeting.

GAH!

I need chocolate.

(EDIT: No, wait, said meeting is Thursday. So I probably ruined the birthday lunch by causing a scene for absolutely nothing.)

I'm an idiot.

Here. Sounds like you could use this.

(And it really isn't your fault; while you might have got your day wrong, she was the one who made a complete and utter horlicks of it).

Not necessarily. The fact that no one commented on it being scheduled for Saturday, and the fact that she did say "tomorrow" on the Thursday e-mail, not to mention the fact that we always do these kind of things on weekdays, should have clued me in. I mean, really - in the past two years, we've never organized a birthday lunch on a Saturday.

Whatever - I apologized to too many people, apologized again when I discovered that only three people at the table noticed the phone call, and I've been told not to worry about it.
