So although I don't think anyone else on my friends list reads Spider-Girl, Cosmic Comix got the first issue of the gimmicky relaunch in today, and I wanted to air out my first-read thoughts. Cut for spoilers and for people who don't care. :)

First off, what I didn't like. A lot of these are pet peeves.

1) Not digging the long hair. Sure, after a summer of no web-slinging and quitting basketball, it makes sense that May would have no inclination to keep it short, but - I liked the short hair! I don't know, with all the female superheroes with long hair they let fly free so any common thug could just grab and yank it or it could get snagged or blind the woman, I liked that May had short hair. It made sense. I mean, it looks good, but cramming all that under her mask is not going to be conducive to a quick change. I know, pet peeve, but it just bugs me - also because I suspect they added the long hair to attract "mainstream" fans. Kind of like the "creative license" Jimmy took with his comic book.

2) I DON'T LIKE GENE AT ALL. Something about him just screams sleaze, in spite of who his uncle is. (I say "in spite of" - Flash Thompson's track record in high school would indicate in this series that his son wasn't that shallow. Normie Osborn, anyone?) Even JJ, player that he was, never gave me that vibe. And the comment about "taking our relationship to the next level" really made me squirm. I'm hoping Tom DeFalco is setting him up to be scum, or pulling an intentional fake-out, because if not that's just bad writing. I suppose it doesn't help that we're coming in after the summer where she met Gene, so we've never seen this relationship actually start out, but he definitely gives me a bad feeling. Davida's analysis of him may be on the mark, and it looks like things are being set up for them to fizzle.

2b) This may be my bad memory kicking in, but where is JJ? Did he pack up and leave town? The absent Moose was mentioned aplenty (poor Courtney!) but there wasn't hide nor hair of JJ. (No Normie or Brenda, but I could understand that as they're outside the scope of high school. And Brad, Chris, and Meagyn are too minor for a mention.)

3) Waitwaitwait - all 100 issues of Spider-Girl were only contained in her sophomore year of high school? Including the 22 issues/9 months Mary Jane was pregnant? Oh, well. I'm just ignoring that in the RP I'm in, since I think I've gone and contradicted that already.

4) Felicity is apparently STILL sore at May for quitting the basketball team (because her Dad's the coach), and she knows May is/was Spider-Girl! Will SOMEONE please point out to this girl that if May hadn't quit, and was subsequently outed, after the Nancy Lu fiasco, things would be a HELL of a lot worse for Coach Thompson? He'd be fired for sure - he nearly was fired for not realizing Nancy was telekinetic. I mean, it's understandable for people who don't know about Mayday's abilities to be cheesed, but Felicity is too smart not to have considered that.

Having gotten that out of the way, the important part:

I am definitely picking up Amazing Spider-Girl #2, because there's a lot I did like about this issue...

1) The first two pages had me ON THE FLOOR. Oh, my. Jimmy's attempt at a Spider-Girl comic - in terms of concept and writing - was so bad it was genius. Planet Spidera? *snerk* And May's reaction was priceless.

2) While Felicity holding a grudge annoys me, the rest of the school? THAT makes sense, and it's good to see that May's decision to quit the team is still coming back to haunt her. I don't remember high school student council politics being this downright bitchy, but DAMN. Still playing hoops with Davida outside of school is a nice touch, although I wonder if Davida suspects something.

3) I DON'T LIKE SIMONE. Which is a good thing, because we're not supposed to. Talk about a stone cold bitch. Is she supposed to resemble Elan the Annoying Goblin Queen? If so, it works.

4) Nice pickup of the Sandra Healy storyline - and by that, I don't mean that was dragged out any longer. It's nice to see May and Courtney continuing to volunteer at the St. Andrews battered women's shelter well after that came to a close.

5) Like father, like daughter - Pete's concerns that May won't be able to go without her webs forever are definitely well-founded, and he should know. Foreshadowing like a 2 x 4, I admit, but the fact that he pointed out that he'd tried to give it up time after time kept it from coming out of nowhere.

6) The actual main plot. Okay, I am totally intrigued. What the hell is Mona hiding in her bag? I honestly thought it was just going to be May breaking her promise to chase away a persistent abuser, so I was really surprised when the thugs showed up and even more surprised to see who their boss was. And that last panel... oh, crap. Next month's preview indicates that Hobby's going to assume the wrong volunteer is Spider-Girl, but you give him time and he'll narrow that list down.

Yeah, I'm going to pick up Amazing SG #2 when it comes out, because I am fairly intrigued. Hopefully, the explanation for Mona and the Glowing Green Bag of Doom will live up to the tease, May will put the webs back on (and I would not be surprised if she doesn't find it hard to get a costume given Peter's suspicions), Felicity will get a clue, Gene will either show his true colors or get written better, and May will get fed up eventually and get a haircut.

Hey, I'm allowed to have my pet peeves. Nyah. :)
