This part of the con report was composed in fits and starts while working on something else. Just to warn you all.

Also, the Blue Mug was on Saturday, so that part of this journal goes past the PG-13 rating, for those who care.

EDIT 10 pm EST: Did manage to get some quotes from the videos I taped during the Blue Mug. Which isn't bad for AVIs recorded by a digital camera.

Saturday, June 23rd: Greg Weisman is Not a Numbers Guy

I intended to sleep in a bit on Saturday. So of course I woke up at 7 am. After the pig-out of the day before and remembering my goal to not gain weight this weekend, I decided to go walking, hot water issues be damned. I walked up and down the main strip, all the way to the Payless Shoes at the end and back and noted the trolley stops and the obscene amount of pancake houses. I stopped at the Walgreens and grabbed a loaf of bread and some Sour Patch Kids; I wanted to make myself a breakfast that wasn't pancakes, wasn't sugar-loaded, and had some protein in it. (No, the Sour Patch Kids did not factor in.)

I got back to the room and showered and made my breakfast - a peanut butter sandwich. Yes, I actually brought a jar of Trader Joe's Better 'n Peanut Butter in the cooler with me. Laugh at my addiction if you will. For the hell of it, I decided to wear the funky two-piece red top I bought off a clearance rack because it was nifty and matched Carmine and was cheap. I also made the mistake of putting too much peanut butter in the sandwich and eating it as I went in search of a cup of tea with Carmine on my shoulder. (People who know me well can probably see where this is going...)

Since I was carrying Carmine, I figured I could go to the hotel restaurant and get tea there. No such luck. The buffet line was ridiculously long, and they weren't letting people who were just getting drinks go around to the register. Rather than wait forty minutes for a cup of tea, I finished off the sandwich, washed up in a public bathroom when the peanut butter leaked on my keys and decided I might as well go to the Red Rooster. So I walked over there, with Carmine on my shoulder. I considered taking him back to the room, but it was getting late. I got my tea, Carmine got a lot of attention (and I felt silly because I really had intended to just stay in the hotel), and I got back to the hotel as the second half of the Radio Play auditions were about to start. Shaun was guarding the door in the stairwell, so I hung out and chatted with him for a while, not really intending to audition.

While we talked, people lined up in the stairwell to audition, and so I decided to read for the hell of it. I didn't expect to get a part; I can project just fine and I can act to an extent, but most of the time my voice doesn't fit any of the parts they're casting. Since I'd already read Lex and Elisa, couldn't do Demona justice and just could NOT read the Angela lines with a straight face, I decided to read Brooklyn for a change of pace. I figured I couldn't screw his lines up too badly.

I got the excuse to introduce Thom and Greg to Carmine, and the audition went really well. I didn't think much of it, and headed off to the Dealer's Room. I managed to call a friend to confirm something before buying an early birthday present there, talked to Susan and was told to bug Carter about publicity for G2008, and then went over to the last few minutes of the Lifedrawing panel to wait for From Fan to Pro to start. I chatted with Jae during the break, and figured he had a shot at getting a part since he could manage a Southern accent. He'd been really nervous about reading Lex in front of Thom, but I think Thom liked hearing other people interpret Lex.

Karine pretty much did the "From Fan to Pro" panel by herself while juggling an armful of baby Samuel. Sam was adorable, and seriously well-behaved throughout the whole thing (and stole the show a couple of times). There was a lot of talk about "Bad Guys," how she got into the business, how she supported herself, questions about technique, tips for submitting and the difference between showing you're interested and being a pest - it was really interesting. But in the middle of the panel, I was horrified to discover that I had peanut butter ALL OVER my shirt - most of it had been hidden by the folds, but I was mortified and immediately set about attacking the spots with the Shout wipes I was carrying in my tote bag while I listened. Great, I'd auditioned with peanut butter all over my front. Yee. (Karine, I was paying attention, that was why I seemed to be looking elsewhere the whole time! It was a great panel, that's why I didn't just get up and clean up in the bathroom!)

I went back to my room after the panel to check for more stains in the mirror, and ran into Kathy there. We decided to get lunch, and I left Carmine perched on the TV (he was unscathed by the peanut butter, fortunately). We ended up getting hot dogs because there wasn't much else in walking distance other than the Red Rooster, and crossing the main street on foot was an adventure in itself.

We got back to the hotel around 2 (it did take a while to get back across, I kid you not), and after I retrieved Carmine we went down to the Con Suite to decompress and mingle. I figured that since the Radio Play wasn't until 5:30, I could make use of the pool since it was hot as anything. Then I saw the cast list, and the pool was out. Huh. So I stuck around in the con suite and tried to watch "The Silver Falcon," but I had to leave because there were too many distractions and I couldn't really watch the ep or write coherent sentences in my notebook. I think my brain goes too fast for my pen; I prefer to write poetry in a notebook, but I feel like I have to type prose. The flow of thoughts doesn't break off as much in prose for me, and I can't seem to write fast enough for my brain.

As for the radio play, the script Greg chose was the script for Gargoyles issues #3, #4... and #5, which hasn't come out yet. We are not allowed to disclose what happens in issue #5. But we are allowed to gloat that we know what happens, and tell people that it is awesome. You all will just have to buy it in August.

I ended up showing up for rehearsals a bit early as a result and found out there were nearly 40 parts to fill, so I figured that was why I'd gotten a part - probably one or two lines - to begin with. Even so, a couple people had to double up; one cast member didn't show, and Emambu had to read three parts because he really is just that awesome. Jae got Lexington, much to his surprise. Thom read Brentwood, Lex's clone, and every single line he read had us cracking up. I was very surprised to discover that I'd been cast as Owen Burnett, and had ten lines, including one with several four-syllable words that I was afraid I'd screw up. Fortunately, I didn't, and that was a line that got a laugh. I resisted the urge to have Carmine acting up during the radio play, although he was on my shoulder for the whole thing. Probably a good thing, since it was being filmed and will hopefully be put up on YouTube in August after issue #5 comes out. I'll post the link when/if it goes up.

We had to share scripts, but I got to keep mine since the person who I was sharing it with agreed. I got Thom and Greg to sign it, and then found out Thom had suggested to Greg that he just cast Carmine, not me and have Carmine pantomime during the line readings. That would have been hysterical, but they decided not to do that. It would have been kind of hard to read and operate Carmine's controls at the same time.

Afterwards, the obligatory round of figuring out dinner plans commenced. Instead of leaving the hotel, Kathy, Emambu, Stephanie, Lynati, Mara and I ended up ordering pizza at the hotel, since we weren't immediately hungry. This was a good thing, because Geno's Pizza utterly FAILED at delivery. They took over an hour, got our order wrong twice and forgot the sodas we paid for, and took their phone off the hook when we called them back to ask about getting our sodas. The pizza itself wasn't bad - I got a few odd looks putting Sour Patch Kids on my slice of cheese pizza (I have never claimed to have normal taste in food!) - but the wait was insane. We didn't eat until maybe 8:30, and Mystery Gargoyles Theater 3000 was still going on when we were done. So we headed over to join in, leaving Carmine on the TV set.

MGT3K was fun; I couldn't see the screen, so I got the bright idea to make myself a booster seat by stacking chairs. Emambu said that it was genius, and I pointed out that would be the case only if I didn't fall off. I didn't fall off, so I'm a genius. Yay. The episodes shown while we were there were "Revelations," "Outfoxed," "The Price," and "The Mirror."

And then there was the Blue Mug. I tried to take quotes, but gave up in favor of video recording a lot of it instead. Someone asked me where Carmine was, and I informed them that Carmine was not mature enough to be present. And I'm leaving space here for those who do need the ratings warning at the top.

...yeah, that's good.

Greg kicked off the panel with the immortal "Greg Weisman is the motherfucking Garg Master!" shout which I'm sure made any civilians passing by the open stairwell blink. Yep, that's us, scaring the normals right out of the gate. I failed at getting quotes, so the few I have are:

Carter: "How many times is Brooklyn going to get cockblocked before Timedancer?"

Greg: "Gargoyle males come circumcised."

Noel: "So how long is Goliath's dick really?"
Greg: "I've rarely measured my own, ...but I'm not a numbers guy." (after some dithering) "He's proportionate from head to tail."

What follows are quotes retrieved by playing and replaying my vids of the Blue Mug. I did not include Greg and Thom's favorite jokes, mainly because Thom's is all in the visual. Both of Thom's jokes, actually.

(Question couldn't be made out in audio.)
Greg: "They're not Oberon's children in a literal sense, they are his people." (couldn't make this out) "Oberon and Titania have two kids together, Oberon has another kid of his own, and obviously Titania has Fox. Those are the four I currently know about, and, uh, there may be more. Because, you know, they've both lived a long time and they're both pretty randy."

Since he already revealed it, Greg saw nothing wrong with revealing that Oberon's son was Merlin, but he didn't reveal the other two.

Someone: "What color is Oberon's penis?"
Greg: "He's blue!" (more laughter and unintelligible chatter) "I think it's really whatever color he wants it to be."

Revel: "You've said that they have different tails, like some have spikes on their tails and some have forked tails, but you didn't say that some of them might have ribbed penises."
Greg: (loudly) "Oh, why the hell not?"

Lynati: "So when are we going to get a Blue reading? We already ask the questions, maybe we can get a short story one of these days?"
Greg: "Next time I'm unemployed! ...which should be any minute now." (laughter and cheering) "It won't be this weekend, because the earliest they'll fire me is Monday. Uh, I'll try to see if I can find some time to put something together for you perverts."
Someone: "We love you, Greg!"
Greg: "I make no promises."
Someone: "If I'm a pervert, it's because of all of you."
(The rest wasn't very intelligible, but the idea came up to hold an auction so Greg could get paid to do it.)

Thom finally dropped his pants in order to show off his latest tattoo - a tribal coyote on his left hip. He also got the chance to show off the "Lex Machine" boxers he was wearing, the pair he'd been presented with at the 2005 convention.

There were a round of not-blue questions as well; I asked if Greg had any specific voices in mind when writing new characters from the comic book. He did say he had Morgan Freeman in mind for a character (whose name I am omitting because I can't remember if he came in during issue #4 or #5 and am playing it safe). "So does Judge Roebling actually sound like Foghorn Leghorn?" someone asked (Revel, was that you?).

I didn't make it to the end of the panel; I think I burned out around midnight and went back to the room, since I was starting to develop a sinus headache. This would prove to be an omen, as I'm starting to think Kathy was right and there was something in the air conditioning that was messing with both our allergies. But that will be explained in my Sunday recap.

Again, if I got something wrong, let me know, I'm fixing these before I post them to Ask Greg. Check again, I just added new quotes to the Blue Mug!

I love that term, "cockblocked." Kathy Griffen was using it a lot on her last episode.

I can't wait for more issues of the comic to actually come out!

Well, I never noticed the peanut butter, so I figure it's all good. ;) I'm glad you liked the panel! I had fun.
