Comic book rambling goes here.
Sep. 26th, 2007 08:50 pmPicked up Blue Beetle #19 today. Contrary to what I'd heard from people, this was not a filler issue. No way, no how. Seriously, when the main plot twist has been looming ever since issue #6, you can't call it filler.
Since I'm not coherent, I'll just list my thoughts chronologically.
- I knew there was going to be a guest artist. And I was SO RELIEVED that it turned out to be David Baldeon.
- Peacemaker's back! Apparently, SOMEBODY forgot his little speech about not wanting to be a mentor. ...ow. Poor Jaime. Lesson learned, though. (And now I want to look up pressure points and see if that was right.)
- Brenda's been feeling like a third wheel lately (see BB #17) and this was a good issue to illustrate that again, especially since it makes her discovery hurt even more since she's already an outsider.
- AHAHAHA the Beetlecave is revealed... with a "Hobbiton" sign on the door. *snerk* Space squirrels? And Hector and Nadia are siblings? That's news.
- "He needs our help with his sexy fight!" "How does Batman keep his kid focused? Swear he drugs Robin's water." *snerk*
- And Brenda puts the pieces together without having to be told flat-out. Not like the clues aren't obvious, but I'm glad no one had to spell it out for her. "I thought my life was better now! I thought I finally got it right!" Ow.
- So when I finally picked up #16, I was a tiny bit disappointed; due to the sheer breakneck pace of the issue, Jaime/Traci also felt a bit rushed. So the mid-fight phone call, with Jaime trying not to get smashed by Giganta and Traci casually fighting off a scythe-swinging skeleton with the cellphone to her ear was...cute. No, seriously. Would like her to come back to El Paso for a whole issue again, although I'm sure that won't happen soon.
- Apparently, despite the humiliation, Peacemaker's lessons are sticking. Yeah, the foreshadowing was subtle as a sledgehammer, but hey, it was a smart way to deal with her.
- And the last four pages: So. Much. Love. From Paco's reaction to what really happened to Brenda's dad, to Hector and Nadia showing Brenda that her aunt had actually severely cut down her activities because of Brenda, to the little speeches that should have been cloying but worked... and of course, the one person Jaime trusts more than anyone else in the world is his Mom. Aw.
- Although with Brenda staying there, it's going to be a little awkward around the Reyes household; you KNOW Brenda's not going to let Jaime off easily, even knowing he kept his mouth shut to keep from hurting her.
In short, the Big Plot Twist was handled well even though the foreshadowing was a bit heavy, and as usual this title doesn't disappoint. Filler issue my ass.

Date: 2007-09-27 01:44 pm (UTC)The Wonder Woman fan in me loved it because they treated Giganta with more respect in this issue than she's usually given in her own title. I love Giganta. :)
