For the first time in 3 and a half years, I had to call Apple tech support.

As soon as I restarted my iMac after installing the iTunes, QuickTime and Security Updates, I got the Mac equivalent of the blue screen of death.

So I now have an appointment to take my iMac in to the Apple Store in Columbia tomorrow.

I'd be homicidal if not for two things: 1) I've still got the laptop and 2) I have had the iMac for three and a half years and never had to call tech support til now. After the Dell, that's not a bad track record. Just saying.

So if anyone else installs any of those updates and gets a System Failure on startup, I think I may know why.

Hmmm....dunno. How long's it been since you've run "Repair Permissions" on the HD? Mayhap it just got confused. Security updates can do that.

Haven't gotten this last one on the MacBook yet, so I can't vouch for cause. But the Apple Genius Bar lives up to its name; when the iMac died (cooling fan blew right before we left for Italy), Dad took it in, had it diagnosed, fixed, and back on my desk by the end of the first week. And considering they weren't even using my generation iMac's parts in the current gen and thus needed to call out for them, that's pretty good. ^_^

They were fairly helpful when Greg's 1st-gen iPod died last year (one of the original click-wheels - HD lasted 6+ years before croaking!) and when Jimmy killed his "gooseneck"-style iMac by dropping it. You might need to wait a little bit for your appointment, but they are helpful folks. (At least the Naptown ones are...)

Been a while, but while the 10.4 and 10.5 Disk Utility worked for repairing permissions, both choked on Disk Repair.

They were pretty helpful, but my iMac is over three years old and they didn't have a copy of 10.3 handy. *sigh* Gonna try the phone option tonight and if that doesn't work get the EARLIEST POSSIBLE Sunday morning appointment and then show up like an hour beforehand to park and maneuver the iMac into the store. (They only have Saturday afternoon slots open. Screw that.)

I just want the iMac to beat the Dell's track record of being essentially functional for 4 and a half years. That's all.
