Well, that hour at the Apple Store is one I'm never going to get back.
Not knocking the support staff there - they tried their damndest and managed to at least determine that the hard drive was mostly okay, but running the disk utility with OS X 10.4 and 10.5 wouldn't work.
Unfortunately, my iMac is still running Panther. They didn't have a copy of 10.3 handy and I didn't have the disks (because I was told not to bother bringing those on the phone - whoops!) so they gave me the direct number for tech support so I could have someone talk me through an archive and install at home.
If that doesn't work, I'll have to make another appointment at the Apple Store.
Given that it's in freaking Columbia Mall, I think I'll try it over the phone first.
Saving grace: When you're lugging a 17" iMac box through the mall, most shoppers will actually get out of your way. Probably for fear that if they make you drop it, you will justifiably kill them. thank goodness they wheeled the iMac out to the bridge for me to pick up rather than having me carry it back to the car.
