I've gotten into the habit of coming home and totally ignoring the computer since I've been on one all day. At work. Where LJ is evil and will smear the reputation of the agency (or something like that, I don't really read the standard "access denied" message).

So, yeah, this is the first time in three days I've looked at LiveJournal. Fail.

Rather than play catch-up, I have a question for the friends who are in the know. I've been catching up on The Dresden Files, and have made it all the way to Small Favor (after re-reading Dead Beat maybe five times). I even got my hands on "Backup" and the anthology with "Something Borrowed."

I've got Turn Coat as well, but... I know enough about Changes to know that the dreaded cliffhanger is part of it. (And that the title is apparently an understatement. Usually "things will never be the same again" makes me cringe in anticipation, although I think that reaction stems from reading a lot of DC comics in recent years.)

I hate cliffhangers. Hate 'em so, so much. With a passion. Even if I know they're going to be resolved, I don't know how and that's what drives me nuts. Especially when it's hard to get out of the situation without resorting to either incredibly clever (more than me) or incredibly bad writing.

But I've been tearing through this series as fast as I can get each one from the library. I'm still not sure what changed between Fool Moon and Grave Peril to jumpstart my interest in the series, but it's become my current fandom addiction. I know I'll get to the end of Turn Coat and despite my hatred of cliffhangers will be really, really tempted to grab Changes.

Should I stop at Turn Coat and wait til Side Jobs is out before even picking up Changes? Is it worth the cliffhanger?

Haven't read Changes yet, but without spoiling Turn Coat, let's just say it doesn't exactly end on a cliffhanger.

(And I think Butcher's on record as saying that he was going to write about twenty Dresden Files books, and end with an apocalyptic trilogy. (Not sure if that counts towards the twenty he was talking about.))

For me, the cliffhanger at the end of Changes was less, "AAAAHHH!!! Must have new book now lest I go crazy!" and more, "Oh, terrific--what's gonna happen now?" YMMV on that, of course, but though I still ended up cursing Jim Butcher, I'm not on pins and needles.

Hmm. I may hold off a little bit, then. Or just stop reading a few pages before the end. Sounds like an ending that's more annoying than hair-pulling, at least.

You want to know your stopping point? Here it is: about a page and a half before the end, there's this set of sentences:

"The only thing certain in life is change. Most of my changes, lately, hadn't been good ones.

Maybe this one wouldn't be good, either . . . but it didn't have that feel to it."

Stop there. Act like it's the end of the book. Read the rest when the next one comes out. All I'm sayin'.

I'm so far behind on this series...and all my other books...I've only read the first three. Bad Jennies.

But if you haven't watched The Dresden Files, pick it up. (Netflix offers it as a free streaming series, and it only went one season, sadly.) It's quite amusing and as near as I can tell, only one episode (#3, I think) used any of the plots from the books (it's also the one w/a certain reporter in it...).

Yeah, I just finished up the series on Netflix. I think "Storm Front" was supposed to be the pilot, but they swapped it around (probably because of its decided lack of Bob).

Gotta admit, while I usually get annoyed at changes that TV makes from the book, I love Terrence Mann as Bob in the TV series.
