The heat index today is supposed to be 100 degrees Fahrenheit, owing largely to the humidity.

Wow, I'm glad I'm leaving this state tomorrow.

Anyway, promised folks an account of this past weekend - but that's not going to happen. I have to go run and grab something, and then there's the baby shower, and then I'm leaving to finish off the apartment and dunk myself in the complex pool for the last time. I hope to be able to post again in early August.

To those on the friends list who are going - see you in Vegas!

*runs off*

(Site visitors, go read this if you don't know about the hiatus already.)

Forget future-dating this, it'll screw up prior entries. I may take [livejournal.com profile] jennies up on her offer to help me put up update notices.

To anyone who visits the Weird Web Page, a notice:

Web page updates will be indefinitely postponed.

This is not by my choice, mind you.

As of yesterday, I no longer have Internet access at home. Which means I can't upload stuff, and therefore can't update the website. At all. No matter what option I take to get Net access at the new place, it'll take a while to get it set up - if I get DSL, I need to get a new phone jack run, and if I get cable, I need to wait for them to run a line to the house.

I have NO CLUE when I'll have Net access at home again, so please don't ask. It's all dependent on when I can get someone to run cable or phone wire to my place, what needs to be rewired, et cetera, et cetera. Basically, it depends on the schedules of others.

I wanted to put a notice on the website about this, but I have simply run out of time. As I write this, I have two days to:

1) Pack up for Vegas
2) Get some sockets grounded in my house
3) Get the last of my crap out of the apartment
4) Clean the apartment
5) Turn my keys into the leasing office
6) Make absolutely sure some services *cough*Comcast*cough* still have my termination date on file
7) Go to a baby shower
8) Get a haircut
9) Somehow get to the Comcast lobby to drop off the cable modem that they FORGOT TO SCHEDULE THE PICKUP FOR,
10) Get to the FedEx facility to get my camera before they send it back to Canon,
11) and actually show up for two days of work.

I'd love to just take the day off and finish all the updates I wanted to, but it's just not happening. I don't have enough leave. I know certain games on my hint site need to be updated, I know certain links are broken, I just CAN'T GET TO THEM.

Anyone contacting me to demand updates will simply be sent here. Please don't take this the wrong way, I got three rather nasty "why don't you update?" e-mails this morning and one polite e-mail telling me about a game update I was aware of but just didn't have the chance to finish the hints for in time. I didn't even manage to finish the page update that said "I know this and this and this need to be updated, I just don't have the time and now don't have the FTP access" before it was time to move the computer out of my apartment.

Here's hoping I get Net access at home sometime soon.

Important stuff first:

Happy 7th birthday, Kara!
Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] celli!

And me, too. And for once, I actually have plans this year. (Artscape! *squee*)

In other news, I mowed the lawn last night for the first time ever, and no harm came to any innocent bystanders. (Not counting the insects I displaced by cutting down the jungle in the back yard, but they took enough out of my flesh so that I think they were asking for it.)

Bonus points to those who recognize the song the title's from. Had it stuck in my head all morning, and it's making me unusually cheerful...

Anyone else on the friends list use Dreamhost, and is anyone else having issues with FTP today?

I swear, the ONE TIME when uploading time is actually of the essence, I'm having problems uploading stuff...

So I pulled into the parking lot at UMBC, half-complaining to myself and half-rehearsing what I was going to tell Dr. K if she gave me a hard time about wanting to take one-class semesters (she didn't), and then I realized I had an audience as another student was walking to her car.

Her: "Are you looking for something?"
Me: "My sanity, actually. Have you seen it?"
Her: *laughs* "No, sorry."
Me: "That's okay, I'm sure I'll find it somewhere."

:)

*looks at friends list*

*diligently does not click on HP spoiler cuts*

*notes people screaming that they want Book 7 last week*

Maybe sitting on it and gauging the reactions was a good idea.

I'm too stressed for cliffhangers lately. :)

Spoilers for last night's episode. Well, okay, more like incoherent babble, but hey.

This almost makes up for the complete absence of Flash in the first season of JLU. )

I need to get going and get back to the house.
mandolin: (Default)
Well, all the furniture is inside the Great White Elephant - almost. I left my computer at the apartment because there are a few things I need to do this week and I need to do them with net access at home and not with my computer boxed up (since until I can get a co-worker to come in and run the grounding wires, I'm not plugging the computer in at the house):

1) Put up website notices to the effect that now I really won't be able to update instead of just not having any freaking time to update. (I'm going with cable Internet for a variety of reasons, most of which are boring and involve numbers and relatives who know the ins and outs of the cable company anyway. However, that means it will take a while.)
2) Change every online account I have to the new info. (eBay and Amazon are not places I should visit at work.)
3) Get pics of the Great White Elephant put up for the benefit of certain friends who will want to see it.
4) Send some stuff to people that I've been meaning to send for months but haven't had time and cannot send from work because the files are too big.

So it's still going to be an interesting week. If I forget about my birthday again, I'll at least have an excuse this time.

*facepalm*

Got home after 10 tonight after a productive day at the house, and realized I should get my stuff together to renew my driver's license. Unfortunately, I realized three problems:

1) My renewal notice, which I put in a safe place, has vanished into the ether.
2) Since I have monocular vision, I can't pass the MVA standard test, so I have to get an appointment with an optometrist to get an eye exam and get a form filled out before I even go to the MVA.
3) My address change guarantees I have to get my license renewed in person.

My license expires in 10 days.

I will be putting myself at the mercy of the MVA this week and begging my optometrist (and if he can't do it, reluctantly begging the opthamologist who kept my pupils dilated for three hours waiting for his slow ass) to squeeze me in.

In my defense, the house has distracted me from other things, and when I turned 21 and got my regular driver's license I did not need to deal with the eye exam crap.

*sigh*

At least I didn't wait until, oh, July 20th to realize this.

Wish me luck.

Update: Don't need the renewal form, and my optometrist is squeezing me in on Friday. Thank goodness. *deflates*

Well, after perusing this article that [livejournal.com profile] heatherly posted, I need to figure out what to do about this blog. And my website in general, but mostly about this blog, since most of my petty ranting is here.

Too many entries come up when you Google my name, and although I'm pretty secure in my current job, I don't doubt that some employers would shun me based on my fannish tendencies. I don't post any public work-related rants, and I've blocked search engines from referencing my LJ - but that doesn't guarantee anything.

I suppose I'll have to yank the links off my site and create a separate update blog. Problem is, there's still my fan site to consider. I'd have to wipe out all instances of my name on it and then get everyone who refers to it in their links not to reference my name. Which may be pointless given that Google has a very long memory.

*sigh*

Yes, I should have used a handle back in '96.

*goes to start locking up some of my older entries*

I got home around 8:30. It is now 11:28, and how much do I have packed?

1 box pots and pans
1/2 box misc. kitchen stuff (waiting on dishwasher)
2 boxes "tosspacked" clothes
2 boxes of hangers

This is all I have to show for almost 3 hours work. Is it just me, or am I just incredibly freaking SLOW at packing? I mean, all the boxes are BIG, but still.

Forget this. I need to go to sleep.
mandolin: (Default)
First off, overheard at D&D last night:

B = the Lawful Good cleric
T = the Lawful Good druid
G = the Chaotic Neutral fighter
DM = the DM

(meeting up with the druid)

T: "Where are you headed?"
G: "There's a Hooters on Route 28."

(T flips through druid's handbook, shows picture of scantily-clad female druid)
T: "Would that be me?"
G: "Okay, I'll listen to you now."

(after a battle with scorpions)
DM: "Morning comes."
G: "I get a towel."

(cleaning up scorpions)
DM: "I just saved us 20 pounds' worth of tail." (laughter) "Okay, that came out wrong."
B (to me): "You've got to write that one down."

Also, I just saw the latest JLU, and I'm about to spoil the ending behind the cut...

WHAT THE???? )

Need to pack. But need to sleep. *sigh* If I had more leave, I'd take time off, since there's very little for me to do at work right now..
mandolin: (Default)
Okay, it's official: Moving Day is July 17th.** Everything but the TV, DVD recorder and the computer will be going. (I have cable til the end of the month, I'm milking that as long as I can.)

Oh, and I'll probably be smacked for getting certain people hooked on another webcomic, but I heartily recommend Inverloch, a serialized graphic novel with gorgeous art and an engaging story. It updates weekly, but you get 4 pages a week, and hasn't been restricted to a Modern Tales site yet.

4 kitchen boxes packed. Forget it, I'm just going over to the house now and unloading so I'll have time to change and shower before D&D.

**Edited because I posted while trying to run out the door and not worry about the Amazing Hiccuping Car and got the month wrong. Sorry! Look at the pretty webcomic rec and ignore my spazzing - the link is correct!

gah.

Postponing the weekend report, I just spent 7 hours finding out more about the Elephant. Skip the next cut if you don't want to hear it.

*head explodes* )

However, I've discovered that my immediate neighbors are very nice. More later; I need to crash.
mandolin: (worked on farscape - neonhummingbird)
Busy weekend, so here's the run-down, LJ-cut for people's sanity. The house will be referred to as the Great White Elephant until it is livable, because it amuses me. :)

Friday: Spent on the phone and trying to pack. Nothing of major interest.

On Saturday, however, Death, Plague, War, and others descended upon the Great White Elephant and much was discussed about repairs and renovations. )

So it was productive, even if most of it was brain-storming. Afterwards, we headed back to Fredneck to hang out and get dinner and because I was going to spend the night there anyway...

Okay, I'm going to just have to break this up into multiple posts. More on the weekend later, I need to go to bed. :)
mandolin: (Default)
For reasons that no one probably wants to hear, the house will be referred to from now on as the Great White Elephant.

(I'd answer the meme that [livejournal.com profile] athersgeo passed on to me, but nothing's working.)
mandolin: (donottaunt by neonhummingbird)
I am a homeowner.

That is all.

*collapses*

Best meme response ever.

Warning, incredibly long and based off Scientology questions. Eating or drinking while reading is not recommended.

*dies*

Left my iPod at Mom's this morning, managed to lock the keys in my trunk again in Towson, but Triple A saved my bacon and I got the cashier's check, so I suppose I'm breaking even. I suppose. :)

Anyway. I hate packing. I don't remember it being so heinous three years ago when I was moving my stuff from Windsor Commons into storage for a few weeks. Then again, that was only a year's accumulation of stuff. This is three years' accumulation of stuff, plus there's the dilemma of what can be packed now and what should not be packed because I don't want to dig it out of boxes in a couple days if I need it (necessities, clothes) or because I'm milking the last month of cable for all it's worth (TV and DVD recorder).

I guess now that it's real, I'm having to fuss over the logistics of living there: namely, where I'm going to sleep. )

So can you tell why I can't just move everything in right away? :)

I will be glad when I'm mostly moved in. Maybe then I can have a life again.

Anyway, I was actually home to watch JLU for once, so some random thoughts: Spoilers for JLU: Question Authority )

*sigh*

I wish I could find my tapes of Justice League episodes. I had "Wild Cards" on tape somewhere, but after packing my VHS tapes I've concluded that it may have been grabbed accidentally when my apartment was robbed.

Anyway, I think it was time for bed an hour ago...
mandolin: (spandex)
Made the mistake of checking this one out and next thing I know, it's an hour later.

I don't usually go for most sprite comics. I make exceptions, like 8-Bit Theater, but I usually pass.

Kid Radd is the latest exception.

It's like the Matrix. If the Matrix were a bunch of 80's video games. Actually, it's sort of the Matrix meets sprite comics meets ReBoot, really.

...yeah, I know. You just have to read it. Preferably with IE.

The ending reminded me of all the best video game endings I remember back when I was a kid.

bed now.
