Okay, I think maybe a handful of people are wondering why I've dropped off the face of the earth for the past couple of months. It's not your imagination. I just realized I had an unfinished post I'd set to private for when I could finish it... from JULY 11. Yeah.

Explanations... well, nothing specific. Work has been CRAZY for the past three months. And, as I've mentioned before, I started the fall semester.

This time, I'm taking two classes, six credits' worth of work.

And I'm working full-time.

Every time I sit down to blog lately, or read through more than two posts on the friends list, no matter where or when, something else comes up.

I'm not dead, and I'm hanging in there. I'm mostly on top of things right now, but it's a very very very big stack of things that needs more time than I have.

Until things clear up...

Holy CRAP, I need to stop disappearing from LJ for weeks.

*starts reacting a week or more late to the various crises*

(I've been promising to do this for a while, and now that there's now a new promo...)

White sand beaches.
Rolling waves of turquoise.
Golden rays of sunshine.
Tropical paradise.
crossinglostadbanner04
Except that what should be a picture perfect holiday spot isn't. This tropical island is home to the survivors of the ill-fated Oceanic Flight 815 and many other individuals whom were pulled to the island through time, space and even from alternate universes. As ecletic and different as these people are, they must learn to survive together on an island that defies the laws of physics and nature, where those who wish them harm are just an arm's reach away, where nothing is exactly as it seems. All are stranded on this island for a purpose, and it can only be hoped that they learn what that purpose is before it is too late.

This is the story of Crossing Lost, a LiveJournal hosted RP, inspired by ABC's "LOST." Crossing Lost is a character-driven, completely non-canon game.

I'd like to apologize to the friends list for cocooning for so long. I will try to remedy this in the near future.

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] debrika! Will see you on Saturday to spoil you!

Meant to post this yesterday, but allergies, cleanup and thunderstorms delayed it.

Otakon was fun and busy; I spent a lot of time running around the Artists' Alley trying to find artists I knew and hanging out at [livejournal.com profile] jennies and [livejournal.com profile] indigoangelcat's table. Passed Caroline Curtis' booth five times before I found her (she was right up front, figures), and stumbled across Garth Graham with a surprised squeal of "Hey! You're here!" and got him, Aido and Mookie to sign the copy of "City Limits" I picked up.

A lot more people identified my costume this year, and I actually ran into the one other person cosplaying as Yukino Miyazawa in slumming mode (she had a Peropero!) so we had to get our picture taken together. (My camera did survive this time around, thankfully.) I also discovered that the costume could quite easily be mistaken for the teacher in Gokusen since the outfit, hair and glasses were very similar. Fortunately, the guy who told me this could read my patch and verified that I did copy the name "Miyazawa" reasonably well from my DVDs.

I went moderately nuts in the Dealers' Room - not so much as I did in 2004 but I wasn't as cheap as I was in '05. I think I wound up spending more time in the Artists' Alley than anywhere else; I only really went to three viewings (Ouran High School Host Club, the Fullmetal Alchemist movie premiere and the AMV contest).

Also, for those who are curious, the rumors are untrue - Otakon 2007 is going to be in Baltimore, on the weekend of July 20-22. That's going to be an interesting birthday, let me tell you... and maybe, just maybe it won't coincide with the worst heat wave of the year. :)

But anyway, I feel compelled to wrap this up with a list:

Things I've Learned From Going to Otakon )

Okay, need to finish cleaning things, company tomorrow... *runs off*
mandolin: (electric)
About to get into the car and head into the city for Otakon!

Anyone who's going to be there, II'll be dressed up as Yukino Miyazawa in slumming mode again. (I couldn't get the Orihime outfit together. You would not believe how hard it was to find a pair of white casual pants in my size.)

Hopefully, I will be able to post pics because I am not letting my camera out of my sight!

whee!

Had a great birthday yesterday, spent the afternoon today attacking the jungle of my yard and organizing stuff, but wanted to stop for a second to show the best birthday card ever, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] jennies:

Who let Beak into the kitchen to begin with? )

I'm kind of afraid of what sort of cake Beak would have produced had he succeeded. (Go see Bob Kiwi and Company if you want to really get the joke. You know you want to.)

I am so going to frame this. :)

Important stuff first:

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] celli!

And happy birthday to my cousin Cara!

Anyway, I'm home, in one piece, and will comment on it later. [livejournal.com profile] violetbloom posted quotes and an account of our trip to Cleveland. I'll be able to post more tomorrow. Right now, I need to shower, get dressed and get a move on. ;)
mandolin: (Default)
*pauses mid-mad scramble to get stuff squared away*

So [livejournal.com profile] violetbloom and I are taking off tomorrow for Cleveland, and when I get back, I'll have finally met [livejournal.com profile] kevenn and (hopefully if we can get our acts together) [livejournal.com profile] fikgirl. *bounce*

*hurries off to find missing sandal*
mandolin: (mayday-smile)
...and yes, I am that much of a dork, thankyouverymuch. But as this was purported to be the last issue of Spider-Girl, and since #99 was left on one of those cliffhangers, and since I had an appointment right after work and would not be able to get to the comic book shop before closing if I waited til the end of the day, I couldn't resist.

The end? Welll... )

So, I guess the guys at Cosmic Comix will NOT be rid of me quite yet. :)

whew.

Six hours' work. Two water heaters (because the first one we bought leaked).

But now I have a working water heater.

To my cousin Mike - you rock.

*thud*

Discovered when I was trying to leave the mall this afternoon that something was embedded in my front left tire. After getting the tire patched at the service center right there, I was very surprised when they told me just WHAT had punctured the tire.

A pen cap.

A silver pen cap punched through my car's tire.

Insert "The pen is mightier..." joke here.

TGIF!

The "I'm not dead" rundown:

1) Work is busy and tedious. And busy
2) I finally caved and turned the A/C on yesterday. (I swear the BGE rate hike occurring in the hottest months of the year was not coincidental.)
3) I've had maybe five minutes to glance at LJ and comment on TWO friends' posts, so I am completely behind on the friends list.
4) Security light is installed in the back. Woot!
5) Rented Mirrormask this week. Shiny. (I'd be more in-depth, but this is a quick rundown.)
6) All you people at G2006, have a blast and say hi to Greg W for me.

So, anyway, in the spirit of Friday and randomness, here's some recommendations:

That's it for now - I'm out of here! :)

Got this link from [livejournal.com profile] greenbaron and HAD to pass it on to the friends list:

If you didn't take 'Beware of Cat' seriously before...

*snicker* Twice, no less!

(Edit: In case the news story expires when you see this, the full text can be found at Tarazet.)
mandolin: (tivoattack)
Now that I've finally managed to see several episodes of W.I.T.C.H., could someone pass on the following message to Greg W. at the con for me since I can't be there?

Verbatim... )

To be honest, though, watching this show AFTER hearing Greg's comments about Irma is adding a whole new dimension to it. :)

If you haven't been checking in at [livejournal.com profile] thegeekstatus, the Geek Forums are back up. For the moment. (I say that because I don't want to jinx it.)
mandolin: (Default)
Since [livejournal.com profile] marielogan just informed me that LJ is being contrary, I'm reposting this first part and deleting my first attempt....

No, I haven't unpacked fully yet, no, I am not fully together and acclimated yet.

But it occurs to me that in spite of my scribbled notes throughout the trip, in spite of having Jen and the professors' pamphlet and the Rick Steve book to jog my memory, if I don't get cracking at recapping those 12 insane days, it just won't get done. It's going to be posted in tiny little bits as I have time, but hey, maybe that'll work better.

(On an unrelated note, I found my notebook from G2005 while cleaning. So that con diary will be finished. Later.)

Quick explanation: The Italy trip was sponsored through my alma mater, and the trip organizers were Dr. Sandona, my English advisor who taught any and all things Renaissance, and Dr. Derbes, an art history professor whose classes I'd never taken outside Honors - but only because the double major made it hard to fit them in. I'm explaining this here to foreshadow the many frescoes we saw this trip. :)
