The high for today is 91 degrees F. It's October.

IT IS TEN DEGREES COOLER IN ORLANDO RIGHT NOW.

[livejournal.com profile] jennies is right. Maryland weather needs hormone therapy.

Picked up Blue Beetle #19 today. Contrary to what I'd heard from people, this was not a filler issue. No way, no how. Seriously, when the main plot twist has been looming ever since issue #6, you can't call it filler.

Since I'm not coherent, I'll just list my thoughts chronologically.

'Hard Truths' (aka 'The One Where Brenda Finally Finds Out') )

In short, the Big Plot Twist was handled well even though the foreshadowing was a bit heavy, and as usual this title doesn't disappoint. Filler issue my ass.

Dear construction workers:

You were hired to renovate the other half of the building.

Setting the building on fire regularly does NOT contribute to that goal.

No love,
the employee who's tired of having to evacuate the building weekly

Has this been posted all over the friends list by now? Probably, but I'm reposting it just to be safe.

[livejournal.com profile] surrealphantast videotaped a panel at DragonCon 2007, during which Christopher Judge is enlightened as to what 'furries' are.

Yes, I know he's getting the definition that does NOT apply to pretty much all the anthro fans I know. That aside, his reaction (and Michael Shanks' facepalming through the whole thing) is a thing of beauty.

"Don't you ever watch CSI?" AHAHAHAHA!

ETA: IT'S ON YOUTUBE! REJOICE!

I was driving home from work a few days ago and noticed that the consignment shop I'd found a few months back - one that usually had some nifty stuff - was gone. I finally managed to pull in there so I could read the signs without getting rear-ended: "Closed for fire." ...I really hope they'll be able to reopen. I feel bad for being slightly relieved that it didn't say "Closed permanently" or something, though. *crosses fingers*

Picked up Amazing Spider-Girl #12 and have flipped through it to confirm or disprove my fears. Not quite what I was afraid of. *sigh* Okay, Tom DeFalco is not on my hit list, but... I foresee a Giant Sucking Black Hole of Angst and Guilt for the next several issues. Arrrgh. I may want to take it off my pull list and get the third trade instead if that's going to be the case. Oh, and Moose is a complete freaking IDIOT.

Because it isn't yet midnight on the East Coast... happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] tptigger. *hugs*

Because I am a complete flake and thought the 8th was a Monday, happy birthday THREE DAYS LATE to [livejournal.com profile] blue_soulfire.

Luciano Pavarotti died today at the age of 71.

This seems a little surreal to me. Maybe it's because I grew up listening to Pavarotti, because Dad would pull out the record every chance he got (usually when we had spaghetti), because I still remember going to hear him in concert with Grandma and Dad. I'm not a fan of opera, but I can honestly say that his music is inextricably tied in with my childhood memories.

And now he's gone.

Just doesn't seem real somehow.

Hippo birdies Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] jennies!

...okay, bed for real now.

An apology

I've disappeared off the face of LJ for maybe the last two weeks, I know. I haven't been ignoring people, I haven't checked the friends list. Which is why I didn't comment to posts that I really should have.

I have no good excuse for this.
mandolin: (sakaki with mayaa)
Three little words:

NO GROUP PROJECTS!

That is all.
mandolin: (banter)
...yes.

Note to self: read [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily with care and with the expectation that it will COMPEL YOU TO SPEND MORE MONEY. I have finally given in and started looking for the TPBs of the new Blue Beetle, and it's primarily the fault of this post. (WARNING: Spoilers for BB #16, image-heavy, and do not drink anything while reading if you value your monitor.)

Also, no spoilers, but Amazing Spider-Girl #11 has officially made my brain try to escape out my ear. (WTF, DeFalco? Seriously, WTF?)

I hate my creativity demons.

I really really really do.

They keep pestering me with plotbunnies that I know will never get written because they're too lazy to actually work out a plot or anything that requires logistics - and of course, this particular plotbunny would be a mystery, so I'd have to script out the details and plan like WHOA. Of course, they haven't given me any real useful details like that, oh NO. Nor will they bother to close plotholes you could drive a truck through.

But still, they will NOT SHUT UP.

So I'm going to kill it by mentioning it here, after which people will get excited and then they won't want to write it anymore.

Basically, what's been gnawing at me for a week now? A Phoenix Wright/Power Rangers Dino Thunder crossover. Phoenix has to defend Dr. Tommy Oliver in a murder case, and the evidence against Tommy isn't that rock solid... but his client cannot supply an alibi. He was kind of fighting monsters at the time.

No, I have no good details, no, I haven't worked out the details of the setup yet (although I know it starts with Hayley and Ethan dragging Tommy to a tech expo in LA), but the idea won't go away. Worse, I got the notion of Maya and Ethan teaming up to investigate - and driving Hayley insane in the process. And they're giving me scenes!

ETA: Changed POV of one of the scenes, it'll make a bit more sense to non-PW fans that way.

'I've got a girlfriend,' Trent said, his eyes still closed. 'A really hot girlfriend who is *standing right there.*' )

*sigh* So if this ever gets anywhere - which I doubt - anyone willing to beta?
mandolin: (electric)
Anyway. More on Otakon. I can't be concise. I know. Busy weekend means this took me FIVE DAYS to compose. I am GOING to get all my recaps done!

If you see any Phoenix Wright gathering photos from Otakon 2007, look for the Mia Fey with short hair. I'll have my pics up eventually, but I know the group shots are circulating already.

For those not in the know, [livejournal.com profile] patrickat posted the G2007 Radio Play on YouTube, broken up into five parts: Chapters 3-5 of "Gargoyles: Clan Building." I recommend checking it out if you missed the con: for Emambu doing three huge parts, for Revel's take on Foghorn Leghorn the Judge, for Thom Adcox's reading of Brentwood that had us all ON THE FLOOR, and for a generally awesome cast. Oh, and Carmine and I are in there too.

Patrick, thank you for recording it.

Part 1 - Cast Introductions and Greg's Foreword
Part 2 - Chapter Three Start
Part 3 - Chapter Three End, Chapter Four Start
Part 4 - Chapter Four End, Chapter Five Start
Part 5 - Chapter Five End

Yeah, I know, I owe more of the con report, but this was easier to link.

(And don't forget G2008 in Chicago!)
mandolin: (howl)
Okay, I actually got home late Monday night, but Tuesday was a catchup day at home and Wednesday was a catchup day at work (and the evening was taken up by a very nice surprise IRL). I have about two weeks' worth of rambling to catch up on, and I'm cheating. These catchup posts will be public so I can link them to non-LJ users who I owe updates to, because I'm not going to want to rewrite them several times.

I really wanted to do my Otakon write up in "Movies in Fifteen Minutes" style, but that would ironically take too long and over a week later my memory of the con is no longer as fresh as it once was. (And yes, I owe more of my G2007 writeup - thank GOD I privately posted an outline or I'd be in trouble.) So instead, here's the more traditional rundown - the first part, anyway, because I can't be concise. Ever.

I can't come up with a creative cut tag. So there. But I need one because Thursday/Friday is going to be LONG! )

While the neighbor's unprotected wireless network is giving us a signal, a quick post:

Read the latest Harry Potter in one day. Not going to spoil it. Liked it a lot. Deb's idea of going back and rereading the whole series? Considering how much comes together, that's probably not a bad idea.

Still at the beach. Still doing okay. But must get off now and rejoin the real world.
mandolin: (runrunrunrun!)
Leaving again for the beach tomorrow. Yay, beach. Not ignoring people, there just isn't time to type.

Update!

Still around. Need to post the Saturday part of the con journal, I know, but various and sundry things have occupied my time these past few weeks. I HAVE THE SATURDAY OUTLINE WRITTEN OUT SO I DON'T FORGET ANYTHING, honest. I just need to find time to sit down and write it up. I plan to have the next part up before I turn 28.

What's kept me away? Various things: the Fourth of July, personal projects, work craziness and getting ready for Otakon this coming weekend. Yep, I'll be there, cosplaying at least one day and handing out flyers for G2008. (Incidentally, [livejournal.com profile] jennies and [livejournal.com profile] indigoangelcat rock; they took a TON of flyers to Anthrocon and got some interest.) What's going to make this weekend interesting is that Artscape will be going on the same weekend. (More on the cosplay to come in a locked post.)

Also, for those not in the know: Gargoyles #5 comes out on Wednesday the 18th. So in 2 days I can stop biting my tongue on discussing it. XD

So yeah. Not dead. Just... still really bad at managing time. :)
mandolin: (tara-kungfu)
This part of the con report was composed in fits and starts while working on something else. Just to warn you all.

Also, the Blue Mug was on Saturday, so that part of this journal goes past the PG-13 rating, for those who care.

EDIT 10 pm EST: Did manage to get some quotes from the videos I taped during the Blue Mug. Which isn't bad for AVIs recorded by a digital camera.

Saturday, June 23rd: Greg Weisman is Not a Numbers Guy )

Again, if I got something wrong, let me know, I'm fixing these before I post them to Ask Greg. Check again, I just added new quotes to the Blue Mug!
