I guess it was inevitable given the economy and the rash of cancellations at DC, but they're cancelling Blue Beetle.

On the one hand, I'm grateful it ran as long as it did. On the other hand, it just makes me sad to see more good titles be cast by the wayside because the mainstream continues to support the mediocre. I'm not mad at the DC editorial staff about this, I'm just disappointed in general. (Although I really think that cancelling the title just as the Brave and the Bold cartoon comes out is a bad plan marketing-wise; they're pulling it just as they have an awesome opportunity to promote it widely.) I really wish they could have waited for Sturges to get through the next story arc after "Boundaries" - the fallout of Khaji Da sharing the idea of nonviolence and free will and everything with the other Reach scarabs would have been a really interesting read.

Although, seriously, DiDio, a word of advice. After a 20-question interview where you discuss the fact that you're axing half a dozen titles, some critically acclaimed and some with decent sales (I mean, come on, the Nightwing cancellation's an RIP gimmick if I ever saw one), that is not a question you really want to pose to fans.

ETA: Okay, can someone please explain the phenomenon of some fans taking delight in this cancellation because they didn't like the character and miss old characters (not just Ted)? I mean, I understand not giving a damn in that case, but... what's there to take pleasure in from the cancellation of a book you don't care for if it doesn't affect the stuff you do like and read? I don't get it. I've heard it from a couple people whose opinions I otherwise respect, too - it's not just trolls expressing this sentiment. The mind boggles.

President Barack Obama.

Wow.

Just... wow.

I know this deserves something more profound, but that's all I can muster at the moment.

Election day meme:
1. Stop talking about politics for a moment or two.
2. Post a reasonably-sized picture in your LJ, NOT under a cut tag, of something pleasant, such as an adorable kitten, or a fluffy white cloud, or a bottle of booze. Something that has NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS.
3. Include these instructions, and share the love.

Pixar is love.

If you're an American and eligible to vote today:

GO VOTE.

I'm sure half my friends page echoes this, but one more voice can't hurt.

waugh.

Radio silence again, mainly because I just don't want to keep spamming the friends list with AAAH I'M GOING CRAZY posts. With the exception of our trip to the PA Ren Faire on Saturday, that pretty much sums up the last couple of weeks.

But here's what I figure: I've got 40% of my grade in Class A (individual assignment #2) due on Oct 27th. First half of my term project for Class B is due on Oct 30th. Second part of the Group Project From Hell for Class A is due Nov. 3rd.

So I expect to have a week of breathing time starting November 4th. Or at least a week of not-crazy.

Til then, wish me luck. :)

Question

Still running all around and to and fro. Things are not bad, just very busy.

But since I'm reminded of it: my cousin is looking for something that will easily allow her to blog and post photos (with an easily-customizable photo gallery) of a cross-country road trip. I'd be tempted to just get her a paid LJ account, but Scrapbook utterly fails and she doesn't know HTML. For personal reasons (family stuff), this is a lot more important than just a fun road trip. Can anyone recommend something that can meet the blogging and photo gallery needs of someone who has a decent amount of Internet experience but not much time to learn Photoshop or HTML?
mandolin: (have no fear)
Which is probably all of you, really.

Any news on whether or not the G2009 date is still tentative? It's been tentative til the end of June, and, well-- I may not be able to make it if the hotel doesn't give the staff a straight answer pretty soon. I will probably be in the San Diego area around the tentative weekend date, at least. Hence the need to know so I can tell certain people who need to book tickets, et cetera soon when I can go. I've used the e-mail on the website, but haven't gotten any reply and it's been almost two weeks.

Help? Bueller?

From [livejournal.com profile] bktheirregular:

When you see this, post another Buffy quote in your LJ. Let's see how long this can go on.

"Don't taunt the fear demon!"
"Why? Can he hurt me?"
"No, it's just... tacky."

Happy day after your birthday to [livejournal.com profile] blue_soulfire! ♥

For some reason, I thought today was the 8th. *facepalm*

Got back from the MD Ren Fest at 5:30. It was fun; we caught the Rogues and really spent most of the day catching these guys' performances. Then I made the mistake of lying down when I got home and fell asleep for two hours. Oops.

But my real reason for posting is to say:

Hippo birdies, [livejournal.com profile] jennies!

whoooo.

Actually returned from Otakon last Sunday night, but was swept up in the Monday Clean Sweep of Doom (it was necessary ilu Mom and Chris), work craziness, and then the 48-hour sinus migraine that screwed me up at work. Because if a programmer can't look at a computer screen without pain, work will not get done. And then school-related crazy.

So without further ado...

Everything I Needed to Know I Learned From Otakon, Or, Lessons I Will Probably Forget Next Year Anyway )

And just in case that sounded too negative...

Just coming out of work-and-Otakon-induced-sick haze and have just poked my head back up into reality.

Nothing to see here, nothing much to report, except I'm not dead and if you see me commenting again, I'm just getting back into the swing of things.

Okay. This is going to sound bitchy. That's why most of it is going to be cut.

No, I am not dead. I am just stressed and mildly pissed off. )

Breaking radio silence for... comic book rambling.

I know, I know, but BB #29 FINALLY came out and after months of praying that the new regular writer wouldn't suck, I can't not throw out my first impressions.

To put it succinctly: I'm going to give Sturges a chance.

'Whoa-- there are some people who should NOT attempt a Power Girl costume.' )

So... could be interesting. We'll see. And hey, lunch break is just about over.

wheeee.

Second off: Okay, drunken DDR is an AWESOME THING to do on your birthday. seriously.

and yes, my furniture is intact.

OKAY! So I think I know why con reports never get done: I get too many quotes and can never finish. Soooo I am just going to do a bare-bones con report and then COME BACK AND ADD QUOTES AND STUFF LATER.

So, anyway. G2008.

At parents this weekend. Cookout went straight from 2 to 10:30 after which I passed out after playing with the adorable but sugar-high-charged cousins. Going out to see a movie shortly.

Short version: To the half-dozen people I told I'd be online today for various things, I WAS WRONG. May be on late tonight when I get home, but it's not happening this afternoon. :)
mandolin: (DENTIST!1!!)
Okay, con journal is still pending. Work is INSANE since we all just hit the "ohshitwe'regonnadie" homestretch. Also, my cell phone vanished last night, and after finally concluding it was lost/broken/stolen (I called it, and it was turned off. I never shut it off and the battery was good), ran around trying to find and activate my old phone for the month remaining on my contract.

Also, picked up Blue Beetle #28. ...I am once again grateful that Will Pfeifer is NOT the regular writer. Not going to go into details, but I don't think anybody was in character, and I saw the big "twist" coming miles away. Also, the resolution? Was ridiculous. Seriously, Jaime was a hell of a lot more in character in his Manhunter cameo and that wasn't even his own book!

Sturges had better be good. I realize John Rogers is a tough act to follow, but after the two months of Pfeifer-penned suck I'm missing his work on this title even more. If the quality continues to go downhill, I might actually drop the book.

Anyway, back to fighting with image uploads now.
mandolin: (dizzy)
I'm home from the Gathering in one piece.

Am hungry.

Have no food in fridge save the leftovers Mom donated (♥ thanks Mom).

THIS MUST BE RECTIFIED NOW.

More later.
mandolin: (have no fear)
It occurred to me that this LJ has enjoyed near-total radio silence this month. So:

Not dead.
Beach was nice.
Work is driving me nuts.
Family is... crazy but it's quieter than usual
Dr. Z liked the awful class paper.
Read BB #27, and I'm glad Will Pfeifer is not the regular writer. Blah.
I'm at the 2008 Gathering of the Gargoyles now using the wireless hotel network on the last day and the fanfic panel is starting.

There will be an extensive con report. AND MAYBE THIS YEAR I WILL FINISH IT.
