Couple things:

1) This journal is going partially friends-only - basically, if it deals with RL, it's getting friends-locked. I have valid reasons for this, although they're not the usual reasons.

2) Random fanfic recs ahoy:

Of Princesses and Puddles by [livejournal.com profile] kaeru_chan.
Bleach, spoilers for Soul Society arc up through Mayuri vs. Ishida.
Summary: "How to Fight a Captain and Win: water and lemon juice. Never piss off Orihime."
I adore Orihime, and this is just a great, in-character, hilarious comeuppance for one of my least-liked characters. (Mayuri so deserves it.)

The Right Technology, by [livejournal.com profile] ffutures.
BtVS/Wallace & Gromit (I'm serious!), post-Chosen for BtVS, I think before Were-Rabbit for W&G. WIP.
Summary: "When Xander meets a stranger in a small British town, it's the start of a grand adventure..."
I'm just recommending this because so far, it WORKS. Bizarrely enough. And then Marcus had to draw a connection between Wallace and a fourth-season Buffy ep that had me falling out of my chair. Oh, and there's vampire chickens too. And a nod to "Chicken Run." *dies*

Consequences, by [livejournal.com profile] mtgat
Gargoyles, post-"Hunter's Moon."
Summary: A seven-story series, so I won't list all the summaries here.
This series is finally complete, and it's an excellent series of post-HM3 events that ignores The Goliath Chronicles. (Most fics do, but anyway...) Missy is the one I blame for getting me into the Gargoyles fandom via fanfic, and while I've been on the fringe for years, this reminded me of why I was sucked in to begin with. Set aside a LOT of time and read this one from the beginning.

3) Happy birthday, Chris!

Talked to a friend of mine who works in the same complex as me; he tried biking to work last week, a seven-mile trip.

He didn't have any trouble in the "bad" neighborhoods getting through; traffic was considerate to the guy on the bike, he didn't have any encounters with pedestrians. But in the more affluent, mostly white neighborhoods, he had an asshole swerving towards him, pretending to be trying to hit him and laughing, and a kid throwing rocks at him. (Yeah, he's white too.)

Food for thought.

***

I didn't notice this until recently, but on my way home from work (if I go the back way) I pass by the "International Society for Krishna Consciousness."

Heh.

***

Oh, and overheard at D&D, but not correctly quoted since I didn't write quotes down:

EDIT: Fixed and added quotes since [livejournal.com profile] jennies has a better memory than me.

You're going to have to go to the cleric for that. )

Next time, I'm definitely taking note of more than just the running tally on how many hit points the 18 hobgoblins have left. :)

Whee!

Hope your husband behaves for your birthday, otherwise, we'll all come over and kick his butt. :)

Contrary to my usual tendency to avoid store-bought costumes in favor of ones I put together (or pieced together), I went and bought a costume at Party City yesterday. For next year. As a backup costume in case I look up and realize Halloween's tomorrow and I can't fall back on the COSTUME T-shirt again. And most importantly, for half price. I mean, come on, if I'm going to get a store-bought costume, $12 isn't going to kill my budget.

Of course, this assumes that I actually remember I did this a year from now...

Now our moving date to the new building at work has been bumped to mid-February. My first response: "What happened this time? Did the contractors forget to put in the plumbing now?"

***

So I've got a group together for the team term paper for my class: me, Mike, and Mike.

Running down the list so far - there's my cousin Mike, Big Mike, Mike D down the street, Mike T I used to eat lunch with, my branch chief Mike, my co-worker Mike who I probably drove up the wall on the last project, my next-door neighbor Mike, and the two Mikes in my term paper group.

I know way too many Mikes.

Remember last week's panic attack? The homework assignment I rushed to finish at the last minute? Now I always say I BS stuff, but usually those arguments follow a logical pattern and I can make it SOUND like I know what I'm talking about. This homework, however... gah. I got halfway through it and just started making shit up. Seriously. I don't even think most of it was in coherent English. And I turned it in wet because I'd dropped it in the parking lot. So I handed in a damp 4 pages of rambling that wasn't even BS logic, but just completely random guesses. I think I squeezed some Wal-Mart ranting in there somewhere to pad out an answer. I'm not sure. I know it had nothing to do with the question.

I got an A+.

I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. Which is not easy to do from those little desk/chair things we have to sit in for class in Sondheim Hall.

Come on - it was damp! It was irrelevant! And - Wal-Mart!

The cricket invasions have died down, but there's a new species of bug that is swarming my front door now. We thought they were lightning bugs at first, but they aren't and we don't know what they are. All I know is that they dive for the interior of the house whenever the door opens.

If I lived near Hood, I could make a killing charging Animal Diversity students to hunt for specimens in my yard. Seriously. An entomologist would have a field day. :)

After living in a neighborhood where kids are bussed in to trick-or-treat (since a row of townhouses is easier pickings than wide-spread big houses), last night was disappointing. I underestimated the (lack of) drawing power of a dead-end street and got maybe 5 groups of trick-or-treaters.

Bah. Time to work on plan B.

In other news, ever had one of those songs that you've always wanted a copy of - but you can't remember the lyrics, artist or title and all you have to go on is a guitar riff?

I found mine last night. :)
mandolin: (Default)
...well, it is.

First, a quick rant about Daylight Savings Time. )

So, back on topic: The back room from hell, the one with the peeling paint that had to be replastered, is painted and looks SO MUCH BETTER. The wiring is in progress. I might have a properly working dining room light in a day or two. Since absolutely everything and everyone held events on Friday, I missed the Anime Society meeting but made it to a friend's for her party instead. (Since half my lunch group got moved to other buildings, I never see them any more. It's really sad.) I cheated at the party and wore the "COSTUME" T-shirt Mom gave me last year. I'll just wear last year's red dress, headpiece and wig for this year's trick-or-treaters. (I'd have worn my Otakon costume, but I forgot I peeled the patch with the kanji off the jacket so I could use it for other things.)

Oh, and does anyone know why LJ is suddenly cracking down and throwing hissy fits over passwords that match a word in the dictionary even with the inclusion of random numbers? Have there been massive account hijackings or something?
mandolin: (spandex)
So, here is the week in review, or Why I've Been Going Nuts. )

So, yeah, been busy. My own fault for signing up for a debate and a case study that were back-to-back.

Anyone seen my brain? I think it went on strike sometime during the last two days and is still at large.
mandolin: (spandex)
All you people posting links to stuff I can't view at work... slow down! *goes through f-list collecting links to mail to myself to look at on my home computer* (Note, I'm just talking big video files and somesuch. Brains out of the gutter, please.)

Survived the privacy debate last night. Since it was scheduled at the very end of class, EVERYONE wanted to get the hell out of there, and we didn't have enough time to cover the more interesting points of our defense of consumer privacy. (I really wanted to get into the EU privacy laws and the headache that's causing businesses that don't comply.) It went okay - unfortunately, when we hit the rebuttals, it felt like I was doing most of the talking. To be fair, I had a lot more research, but still. And of course, I talked WAY too fast and stumbled, but at least I was loud enough. I was so happy when the whole thing was over, and the class - who had evaluation forms instead of having to vote - were pretty kind to us.

In other news, the front room and the dining room of the Great White Elephant have been freshly painted and damn, do they look better. Mom, Chris, Vi, Bruce: you rock. Thank you so much. :)

Weekend SisterHood Get-Together, Take Two actually didn't fall apart this time. Yay.

After confirming on Friday that yes, my oil burner works and tech #1 was a moron - tech #2 did all the proper testing and cleaning and gave me a copy of the results - I went out to Fredneck on Saturday to rendezvous with the gang and catch a showing of Wallace and Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit before D&D. Despite a hold-up on my end, I got to the theater, got inside and found where War, Plague and Death were sitting just in time for the previews to start. Ha! Much more successful than last week, although admittedly not on the same scale as a Ren Faire trip.

So anyway, the movie was good; while I'm not as well-versed in W&G as Death, I did see "The Wrong Trousers" waay back in 1994 when it got the Academy Award. I truly adored the short, although I was biased in that anything with criminal penguins is bound to amuse me. So while the movie itself was short on penguins, it was a real treat. )

I'm not going to be able to look at vegetables for another week without giggling.

There's more, specifically the new D&D campaign silliness, but I'll post that later. Stupid debate outline.

The oil burner's working, Kent's going to be okay, and I'm going to bed. :)

Bleah weekend. Let's just say that the lesson was that contingency plans are a must when the weather strikes at you.

One room in the Great White Elephant has been primed and mostly painted, thanks to my mom and stepdad who put in way more hours than they had to. After a month and four electricians, I'm going with the first one who came in back in September. Oh well, no one can give me grief that I didn't shop around. Part of me is ticked off that I just didn't take the offer a month ago - hell, the job might be DONE by now - but at least I know it was a good choice now.

But since it's been so long, we're going ahead and painting anyway. The plan is to continue and mostly finish on Sunday and Monday. *crosses fingers*

I've been MIA because the first debate - the one I'm in - is on Tuesday. The professor wanted to have half our grade depend on the class voting for a "winner" - the losing team would have points deducted based on the number of people they lost by. Neither of the sides of the debate liked that idea. Pretty much the entire class rebelled against that idea, and now she's having the class fill out evaluation scoring forms, but there's still the position statement and actually getting together to meet. Which is kind of tough - our last team meeting was Monday, which was interrupted by a hole the size of a walnut in one of my team members' back tires. Oy. I'm just glad she managed to get the car off the highway and park it safely.

Tonight a family friend is coming over to look at the burner with the bad valve. I really, really, really hope it's not a lost cause and that he can fix it - I can NOT afford to replace the oil burner and have the wiring redone in the same season. I bought the house because the heating system was supposedly functional and could be used for at least this coming winter - if I get a tenant next spring, their rent could go towards a new one. (And if it was busted, I'd have walked or negotiated a much larger reduction in the final price - cracking paint is one thing, but a busted heating system cannot be overlooked.) My only consolation is that I locked in an oil rate well BEFORE Labor Day - I can't imagine what it would have been if I'd waited longer. I just hope that if it has to be replaced, that I can get the oil that was just delivered transferred to the new burner.

And somewhere in the middle of this, I need to call a chimney sweep.

More when I'm sane again. :)

I say five minutes because that's all the time I'm giving myself to do it in. Got this from [livejournal.com profile] athersgeo.

Friday means:

1) getting up at the crack of dawn to get to work early and thus get out early

2) waiting (im)patiently for Bleach-Society's next fansub of Bleach

3) preparing to make a (usually spontaneous) trip south to Annapolis, west to Fredneck or north to Bel Air

4) going out to lunch since 95% of the people I eat with always go out to lunch just for the sake of going out on Friday

5) bearing witness to at least one division war-related bit of insanity at work (yeah, the picnic's over, but it's Friday and I'm waiting for the response to the poster someone made)

Tagging: [livejournal.com profile] violetbloom, [livejournal.com profile] kevenn, [livejournal.com profile] jonathlee, [livejournal.com profile] marielogan, [livejournal.com profile] spacebabie and [livejournal.com profile] jennies

Okay, need to do my hair, find my shoes, and get on the lovely wet road.

(BTW, while the anime's slow, my current music? "Air" has one of the nicer opening theme songs. I would love to find a full version of this song.)
mandolin: (Default)
If you notice a sudden influx of comments, it's because I'm playing catch-up on my friends list.

It's not that I waited a week to comment, it's just taken me a week to find a period of time where I can actually read my friends' posts. :)

So, busy weekend. Took me three days to put this post together, so the week's shaping up to be about the same.

Dept. picnic was fun and about as insane as the pre-picnic games predicted; DASSD won the trophy and things devolved into a water balloon assault that I nearly missed out on (but forgot my jacket, so I caught the tail end of it when I came back). I work with crazy people. It's fun.

Friday night, I went to see Serenity and was quite pleased to see that the theater in Westview was more than half full. I will now ramble - so beware of big damn spoilers! )

I stuck around and went to Frederick in the Streets with the gang on Saturday - it was fun and we ate too much and I picked up some Christmas gifts. Jen also discovered that the British imports store had Maynards sours! *does the dance of joy* I haven't been able to find those since I was in Dublin. In the Streets was fun, but it seemed smaller than the last few times I'd been to it, probably because they still had the Carroll Creek park walkways cordoned off. I seem to remember the street vendors extending their reach down along the creek on both sides of Market Street at the end. With that blocked off, the south end of Market seemed kind of packed in.

Then we played D&D, and, well... I didn't expect our campaign to end like THAT.

'Screw you guys, I'm out of here!' )

Still on the quest for electrical estimates. Electrician #1 is currently winning. Electrician #2 quoted me a much higher total price (and I've been trying to get a breakdown from him), and Electrician #3 got the wrong time his first try getting out to my place, and was supposed to e-mail me an estimate on Friday - but despite me politely calling him to remind him on Monday (and ensure that he had the correct e-mail address), I still haven't gotten anything from him. Electrician #4 will be by on Friday. *sigh* Well, at least I know all the ins and outs of how to potentially get to the wiring in my house now.

Hm. Baby in the next aisle of cubicles over. I think I'll go investigate...

This is what I've been doing in between tearing my hair out over this homework assignment that really shouldn't be this hard. Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] estirose.

Directions:
1) If you want to do this meme, DO NOT click on the LJ-cut before you do.
2) Pick 12 characters from any fandom and list them numerically.
3) After you've picked your 12, click on the LJ-cut and answer the questions yourself in your own journal. (Make sure to cut the questions so other people can pick up the meme!)

So here's my 12:

1. Inoue Orihime (Bleach)
2. Dr. Theodore Morris (Now and Again)
3. Eric Myers (PR Time Force)
4. Charles Gunn (Angel)
5. Major Samantha Carter (Stargate SG-1) - Yes, I know she's a Colonel now, but my viewing tapered off in season 8 (and a bit in season 7), so I'm using a timeframe before that.
6. Dr. Eric Foreman (House, MD)
7. Dawn Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
8. Saki Hanajima (Fruits Basket)
9. David Xanatos (Gargoyles)
10. Sara Pezzini (Witchblade)
11. Kaylee Frye (Firefly)
12. Megabyte Damon (Tomorrow People)

Here we go - don't peek until you've picked your 12, and no changing up! )

Okay, I ran out of steam when I came back to some of these questions, but I am really fried.

On the other hand, now the Angel/Bleach creativity demons won't shut up. Unless I ask them to explain what the heck Illyria is doing in Karakura Town in the first place (which is one of their major plot points), then they bitch that I'm asking too much of them. Oh, well, two out of three isn't bad.
mandolin: (worked on farscape - neonhummingbird)
If you see this meme, quote Firefly in your journal...

"Sir? I think you have a problem with your brain being missing." --Zoe, The Train Job(?)

Two days! Eeee!
mandolin: (Default)
Okay, I am doing catch-up for the week, but I'm cutting it like crazy.

First and most importantly: I have yet to get a hold of [livejournal.com profile] leiza, and I'm starting to get worried. EDIT: For those of you wondering about Walkthroughs From the Geek, check [livejournal.com profile] thegeekstatus - Leiza posted there a few days ago about the status of the site.

I finally went to visit [livejournal.com profile] jennies down in Annapolis last week, and I'm glad I did. )

No D&D this week since we agreed that a party with just the barbarian, paladin and a thief wasn't going to be a match for more zombie ogres. )

Got the estimate from Dynamo Electric and am still waiting on more. )

I now have ABC, CBS and NBC in the back room. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kahva for the tip!

The department picnic is Thursday, and with the picnic comes the inevitable division competitions - well, just one pre-picnic competition this year. I have NEVER seen a baby picture contest draw such a crowd before. )

I've finally figured out some of my issues with my class. )

Anyway. I can leave now, so until whenever...
mandolin: (Default)
Was going to do some catchup since I've been off LJ for a week, but more pressing concerns have distracted me.

[livejournal.com profile] leiza, I know Dallas is a good 200 miles north of Houston, but I'm still worried. Where are you??
